Scorza Completes Refurbishment Projects on NCL Jewel and Carnival Mardi Gras: Quality and Inclusion Onboard

The Gerolamo Scorza team has recently concluded a dual refurbishment and modernisation project on two cruise ships, demonstrating both technical expertise and design sensitivity.

Modernisation of the NCL Jewel

Onboard the NCL Jewel, the scope of work covered several key areas:

  • Public and Dining Areas: Installation of marble and non-slip tiled flooring in premium venues such as Cagney’s, the Spinnaker Lounge, and Magnum’s Bar. New stainless steel tops were also fitted in the Teppanyaki restaurant.
  • Exterior Structures: The complete replacement of the new gazebo cover on the pool deck, including both the supporting structure and the canvas.
  • Interior and Technical Areas: Refurbishment of the theatre's frontal area with the laying of new vinyl flooring, and acoustic insulation upgrades in the cabins of the Captain and the Chief Engineer.
  • Crew Accommodation: Conversion of several crew cabins to petty officer standards, including the supply and installation of new beds and wardrobes.

The team also managed auxiliary operations such as the opening and closing of the pool deck stanchion covers, as well as the removal and subsequent reinstallation of Fire-Rated Dividers (FSDs) and shelving, necessary to accommodate the transit of new equipment, specifically a new oven.


Inclusion Project on the Carnival Mardi Gras

In parallel, Gerolamo Scorza completed a focused project on the Carnival Mardi Gras in Marseille, centred on the theme of gender inclusion onboard. Given the growing number of female engineers, there was a requirement to create dedicated and suitable spaces for their needs. The work on Deck 2 involved the reorganisation of the "Engine Changing Room/Laundry" area, which is now partitioned into three distinct spaces: a communal laundry room and two separate changing rooms (male and female), with the addition of a dedicated toilet within the female changing room.

While the partitioning of the spaces did not present significant structural complexity, the true technical challenge lay in extending all necessary plumbing and service systems to create a complete bathroom in an area that was originally not pre-fitted for such facilities during the ship’s construction. The success of this project, which combines technical efficiency with design consideration, reaffirms Scorza's focus on adapting to evolving operational and social requirements onboard.
